Job Description:
A Purchase Officer in a steel manufacturing company manages the end-to-end procurement of raw materials (such as iron ore, coal, and scrap), machinery spares, and industrial consumables. They ensure uninterrupted production by negotiating contracts, maintaining supplier relationships, and optimizing costs to meet budget targets. [1, 2]
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Sourcing: Identify, evaluate, and develop reliable suppliers for core materials and consumables.
- Negotiation: Negotiate prices, payment terms, and delivery schedules to ensure cost-efficiency and budget compliance.
- Procurement Operations: Raise, manage, and track Purchase Orders (POs) through internal ERP systems, ensuring adherence to technical specifications and quality standards.
- Inventory Control: Monitor raw material stock levels to prevent stockouts or over-ordering in coordination with production and warehouse teams.
- Cost & Market Analysis: Track market trends for metal and raw materials to identify alternative sourcing opportunities and optimize costs.
- Internal Coordination: Collaborate closely with Production, Logistics, Quality Assurance, and Finance teams to verify invoices and align purchases with operational requirements. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Commerce, or Business Administration. An MBA/PGDM in Supply Chain or Materials Management is highly preferred.
- Experience: Proven track record in metal, sponge iron, steel billet, or heavy manufacturing industries.
- Skills: Strong negotiation, analytical, and communication skills, alongside proficiency in ERP systems and inventory management software. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
