Job Description:
A Safety Officer in a steel plant is responsible for mitigating severe industrial risks—including heavy machinery, molten metal, extreme heat, and hazardous materials. They enforce strict occupational health protocols to prevent accidents, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote a "safety-first" culture among staff and on-site contractors. [1, 2]
Core Responsibilities
- Hazard Identification: Conduct daily plant inspections (melting shops, rolling mills, and maintenance areas) using tools like HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) and JSA (Job Safety Analysis). [1, 2]
- Compliance Enforcement: Ensure full adherence to statutory safety laws (such as the Factories Act) and local environmental and safety standards. [1, 2]
- Incident Investigation: Lead root-cause investigations into accidents or near-misses and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Training & Drills: Organize routine toolbox talks, safety orientations for new hires, and comprehensive emergency/evacuation mock drills. [1]
- Contractor Management: Supervise and audit the safety performance of external contractors to ensure compliance with plant rules.
- PPE Management: Monitor the daily issuance and proper usage of essential Personal Protective Equipment (helmets, heat-resistant gear, respirators). [1, 2, 3]
Key Requirements & Skills
- Qualifications: A degree or diploma in Industrial Safety, Fire and Safety, or Occupational Health.
- Certifications: Advanced qualifications like NEBOSH, OSHA, or ADIS (Advance Diploma in Industrial Safety) are highly preferred.
- Experience: Typically 2 to 4+ years managing safety in heavy manufacturing, steel fabrication, or blast furnace operations.
