Job Description:
A Nursing Superintendent manages the entire nursing department to ensure high-quality patient care, safety, and operational efficiency. Key responsibilities include planning nursing services, hiring and training staff, enforcing clinical protocols, and managing resources/budgets. The role requires strong leadership, administrative skills, and a B.Sc./M.Sc. in Nursing with 8–10+ years of experience.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Administration & Leadership: Formulate nursing policies, objectives, and standards for the hospital. Act as a liaison between nursing staff and top management.
- Staff Management: Direct, supervise, and assign duties to nursing staff, including nurses, assistants, and students. Handle staff discipline, counseling, and welfare.
- Clinical Supervision: Ensure proper patient care through regular ward rounds and inspections. Ensure adherence to infection control and safety protocols.
- Resource Management: Manage the procurement and maintenance of nursing equipment and ward supplies. Assist with budget planning for the nursing department.
- Training: Develop and conduct orientation and in-service education programs for staff.
- Documentation: Oversee the maintenance of nursing records, reports, and attendance.
Requirements
- Education: B.Sc. in Nursing (required); M.Sc. in Nursing (preferred).
- Experience: 5+ years of nursing experience with at least 5 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Skills: Strong leadership, decision-making, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
- Licensure: Valid state nursing license.
Common Reporting Structure
- Reports to: Medical Superintendent, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), or Hospital Administrator.
- Subordinates: Deputy Nursing Superintendent, Assistant Nursing Superintendent, Ward Supervisors, Staff Nurses.
