Job Description:
A Purchase Manager for a steel fabricator manages the end-to-end procurement of raw materials (steel plates, sections, pipes), consumables, and components, ensuring uninterrupted production at optimal costs. They handle supplier negotiations, vendor development, and inventory control, typically requiring an engineering background and 5-10+ years of experience in heavy engineering/fabrication.
Key Responsibilities
- Procurement & Strategy: Source raw materials (plates, structural steel, consumables) and negotiate pricing/terms, adhering to project budgets and schedules.
- Vendor Management: Identify, evaluate, and maintain relationships with suppliers, including auditing their capabilities.
- Inventory Control: Maintain optimal stock levels of raw materials and consumables to avoid production stoppages while minimizing inventory costs.
- Production Liaison: Coordinate with fabrication and project managers to ensure materials meet technical specifications and project timelines.
- Compliance & Documentation: Ensure purchase orders, contracts, and imports (if applicable) comply with company policies, statutory regulations, and quality standards.
- Data Management: Utilize ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Tally) for material tracking, vendor payments, and generating MIS reports.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical/Production/Industrial Engineering preferred.
- Experience: 5-10+ years in procurement within a heavy engineering, steel fabrication, or manufacturing environment.
- Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of steel products, raw materials, fabrication, and market trends.
- Software Skills: Proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Competencies: Strong negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.
