They ensure compliance with statutory regulations (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA, ISO 14001/45001) while proactively identifying hazards related to heavy machinery, hot work, and chemical handling.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Compliance Monitoring: Ensure strict adherence to statutory safety regulations (Factories Act 1948, local rules) and internal safety SOPs.
  • Permit-to-Work (PTW) System: Issue and monitor permits for high-risk activities, including hot work, confined space entry, working at heights, and heavy lifting.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, near-misses, and dangerous occurrences, conducting root cause analysis (RCA) and recommending corrective/preventive actions.
  • Safety Training & Promotion: Organize safety inductions, toolbox talks, and mock drills. Promote safety awareness through campaigns, safety weeks, and incentivized safety programs.
  • PPE Management: Enforce the correct selection, use, and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by employees and contractors.
  • Safety Documentation: Maintain statutory records, inspection reports, training records, and incident reports.
  • Environmental & Industrial Hygiene: Monitor effluent quality (ETP), air ambient quality, stack emissions, and noise levels.

Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical/Chemical/Electrical) or a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry/Physics).
  • Safety Certification: A recognized diploma/degree in Industrial Safety (e.g., ADIS) is often mandatory. NEBOSH IGC or IOSH certifications are strongly preferred.
  • Experience: 2–7 years of relevant EHS experience, with a focus on steel manufacturing, foundry, or heavy industry.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of ISO 45001 (OHS), ISO 14001 (Environment), and machine safety (lockout/tagout).
  • Competencies: Strong communication skills (local language + English), analytical ability for investigation, leadership, and the ability to influence behavioral safety.

Typical Working Conditions
  • Environment: Shop floor/Plant-based, often involving exposure to heat, noise, and industrial hazards.
  • Hours: May involve shift-based work, regular inspections, and emergency response, requiring flexibility.
