Job Description:
The General Manager (GM) for ferro alloys projects is a senior executive responsible for the comprehensive oversight, strategic direction, and successful execution of all operational and project activities related to a ferro alloys plant or division. The role combines technical leadership, project management, financial acumen, and people management to ensure high-quality output, efficiency, and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
The primary duties of a GM for ferro alloys projects include:
- Strategic Planning & Leadership: Developing and implementing long-term business plans, operational strategies, and production targets. This includes providing technical and administrative leadership to the entire plant team.
- Project Management & Execution: Leading all project activities from initiation to completion, which often involves the installation of new facilities (like submerged arc furnaces), capacity expansion, and managing EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects. This also involves project planning, scheduling, execution, and contract management.
- Production and Operations Management: Overseeing all stages of ferro alloy production (e.g., ferromanganese, ferrosilicon) to maximize output and efficiency, ensuring adherence to production schedules and quality standards.
- Financial Oversight & Cost Control: Managing the plant's financial budget, including material, manpower, and equipment costs. The GM is responsible for monitoring commercial aspects, implementing cost-saving initiatives, and ensuring cost-effective management of resources to meet bottom-line targets.
- Quality and Compliance: Implementing robust quality control measures and ensuring strict adherence to all safety norms, environmental regulations, and statutory requirements. This may involve coordinating with government regulatory agencies.
- Supply Chain and Inventory Management: Managing the entire supply chain, from raw material sourcing (coordinating with mines and suppliers) to the dispatch of finished goods, while optimizing inventory levels.
- Team Leadership & Administration: Overseeing general plant administration, including labor relations, recruitment, training, and performance management of personnel. Fostering a positive work culture and effective communication is essential.
Essential Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree (B.E./B.Tech) in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or a related field; a Master's degree may be preferred.
- Extensive experience (typically 15-25+ years) in ferro alloys production or the wider mining/metallurgy industry, with a significant tenure in senior management or project roles.
- In-depth technical knowledge of ferro alloys production processes, equipment maintenance (e.g., arc furnaces), and quality control.
- Strong leadership, strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
