Job Description:
A Mechanical Engineer specializing in Scrap Processing (such as in a Steel Melt Shop, DRI Plant, or Waste-to-Energy plant) is responsible for the mechanical integrity, maintenance, and optimization of machinery used to process scrap metal. They ensure high operational uptime, maximize safety, and optimize the efficiency of shredders, conveyors, furnaces, and material handling equipment.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Reliability: Ensure high uptime for scrap processing machinery (e.g., shredders, shears, balers) by implementing proactive, predictive, and preventative maintenance programs.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve mechanical failures in real-time, performing root cause analysis to reduce future breakdowns.
- Equipment Optimization: Analyze and optimize the performance of conveyors, magnetic separators, furnaces, and crushing equipment to improve throughput.
- Project Management: Oversee the installation, erection, and commissioning of new mechanical equipment or plant upgrades.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all operations comply with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) regulations, reducing hazards related to dust, heavy machinery, and material handling.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of machine downtime, repair logs, and maintenance procedures.
- Inventory Management: Coordinate with stores/procurement for the availability of spare parts and critical components.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Experience: 2–5+ years of experience in plant maintenance, specifically within steel plants, scrap recycling, or heavy material handling industries.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, gearboxes, and heavy machinery maintenance.
- Software Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD for layout drawings and MS Office for reporting; SAP knowledge is often preferred.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective actions.
- Team Leadership: Ability to manage technicians and operators on the shop floor.
Typical Working Conditions
- Environment: Industrial plant, frequently working on the production floor, often exposed to noise, heat, and dust.
- Schedule: May require flexibility, including shift work or callouts to handle emergency breakdowns
