Job Description:
A QC Chemist for a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) job description involves analyzing raw materials (like scrap, coal, and dolomite), intermediate products, and finished steel billets to ensure chemical composition meets quality standards. Key responsibilities include performing chemical analysis using instruments like spectrometers and carbon-sulfur analyzers, calibrating equipment, documenting and reporting results, and maintaining lab safety and cleanliness. 
 
Key responsibilities
  • Perform chemical analysis: Conduct chemical and physical analysis on raw materials (e.g., HMS, sponge iron), molten metal, and finished products like MS billets.
  • Operate lab equipment: Use and maintain analytical instruments such as spectrometers, carbon-sulfur analyzers, and other tools.
  • Ensure quality standards: Verify that the chemical composition of all materials and products meets production and quality specifications.
  • Documentation and reporting: Monitor and record test results accurately in lab registers or digital systems, and ensure timely reporting to production and quality control teams.
  • Calibration: Assist in the calibration of lab instruments and maintain related records.
  • Safety and compliance: Adhere to all safety, environmental, and quality standards, and maintain a clean and orderly lab environment. 
 
Essential skills and qualifications
  • Education: A degree in Chemistry or a related field is typically required.
  • Analytical skills: Proficiency in analytical chemistry techniques and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Technical skills: Experience operating and maintaining analytical laboratory equipment.
  • Attention to detail: Keen attention to detail for accurate testing and data recording.
  • Communication: Good communication skills for reporting findings and collaborating with other teams.
