Job Description:
A LAB HOD (Head of Department) for a steel manufacturing industry job description involves managing laboratory operations for chemical and physical testing of raw materials, molten metal, and finished products to ensure quality standards. Key Responsibilities
 
  • Quality Assurance:Oversee chemical and physical testing to ensure steel products meet quality standards. 
  • Laboratory Management:Manage daily laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, calibration, and safety protocols. 
  • Staff Supervision:Lead and supervise a team of lab personnel, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to testing procedures. 
  • Process Optimization:Identify opportunities for improving testing methods, process efficiency, and cost reduction. 
  • Compliance:Ensure all laboratory activities comply with regulatory requirements and industry standards. 
  • Record Keeping & Reporting:Maintain accurate laboratory records, including test results, charts, and reports. 
  • Safety:Implement and enforce strict safety guidelines and practices within the laboratory. 
Required Skills & Experience
 
  • Technical Expertise:Strong knowledge of analytical techniques, laboratory equipment, and testing standards in the steel and metallurgy sector. 
  • Testing Proficiency:Experience with a range of tests, including chemical analysis, mechanical testing, hardness testing, and microstructure examination. 
  • Equipment Operation:Hands-on experience with lab equipment such as spectrometers, microscopes, and other testing apparatus. 
  • Problem-Solving:Ability to troubleshoot issues and implement solutions to maintain smooth laboratory operations. 
  • Communication:Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting findings and coordinating with teams. 
  • Leadership:Experience in managing a team and overseeing laboratory functions. 
Typical Duties
  • Perform routine and complex tests on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished steel products.
  • Prepare test samples and maintain testing tools and equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections and audits to ensure quality and safety standards are met.
  • Assist in developing and validating new testing procedures.
