Job Description:
A Distributed Control System (DCS) Operator monitors, regulates, and optimizes industrial processes from a central control room in facilities such as power plants, refineries, and chemical factories.
Job Summary
The DCS Operator acts as the "brain" of plant operations. They oversee real-time data, control system graphics, and alarm panels to maintain safe, efficient, and continuous production, while coordinating directly with field operators and maintenance teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Process Monitoring: Continuously track process parameters—such as temperature, pressure, flow rates, and liquid levels—via DCS displays, HMI screens, and trend logs.
- System Operations: Execute safe startup, shutdown, and load-change procedures for major equipment (boilers, turbines, reactors, pumps, and compressors).
- Alarm Management & Troubleshooting: Respond immediately to process deviations, system interlocks, and alarms to prevent equipment damage or plant trips.
- Field Coordination: Communicate with on-site field operators to adjust valves, inspect machinery, and execute physical line-ups.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) protocols, permit-to-work systems, and emergency response procedures.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate shift logs, production reports, and incident logs.
Required Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
- Education: B.E. / B.Tech or Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Electronics, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent industrial training).
- Experience: Generally 2 to 5+ years of hands-on experience in control room operations within power generation, oil & gas, petrochemicals, or chemical processing.
Technical & Soft Skills
- DCS Platforms: Proficiency with industrial control systems (e.g., Honeywell, Siemens, Yokogawa, or similar SCADA/PLC interfaces).
- Diagram Literacy: Ability to read and interpret Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs).
- Analytical Thinking: Strong capacity to diagnose instrumentation anomalies, control loops, and PID tuning issues.
- Communication: Clear radio/verbal communication skills for coordinating shift handovers and field staff.
- Shift Readiness: Ability to work continuous or rotational shift schedules, including night shifts.
