Job Description:
A General Manager (GM) of Techno-Commercial for a Rolling Mill and TMT Plant serves as a vital bridge between engineering and business strategy. They lead end-to-end plant operations, oversee raw material sourcing, manage budgets, and drive profitability while maintaining high-yield TMT production standards. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Here are the detailed roles and responsibilities for this position:
1. Core Responsibilities
- Plant Operations & Production: Oversee production processes, roll pass designs, and equipment reliability. Ensure the TMT mill operates at maximum capacity utilization while minimizing cobbles and maximizing finished prime yield. [1, 2, 3]
- Commercial & Financial Control: P&L (Profit & Loss) management, budget preparation, and cost optimization. Analyze production costs (cost per ton), monitor power consumption, and control inventory. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- Supply Chain & Sourcing: Lead the procurement of critical raw materials (billets/blooms), mill spares, and rolls. Manage vendor negotiations, develop alternative suppliers, and manage contracts. [1, 2, 3]
- Sales, Logistics & Dispatch: Coordinate with marketing teams, dealers, and dispatch to ensure timely delivery of TMT bars to clients. Maintain customer satisfaction and handle technical customer grievances. [1, 2]
- Project Management & Commissioning: If managing an expansion or new setup, supervise equipment layouts, erection, and commissioning of new mills, cooling beds, and TMT quenching systems. [1, 2]
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure the plant complies with statutory labor laws, environmental regulations, and safety standards to maintain a secure work environment. [1, 2]
2. Essential Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering. An additional MBA or post-graduate degree in Operations/Project Management is highly preferred. [1, 2, 3]
- Experience: Typically 15 to 25+ years of relevant industry experience, with at least 5–7 years in a senior techno-commercial leadership role (e.g., DGM or GM) in a continuous Hot Rolling / TMT plant. [1, 2, 3, 4]
3. Key Skills
- Technical: Deep understanding of hot rolling processes, quenching and self-tempering (QST) technology, reheat furnaces, and roll pass design.
- Commercial: Strong vendor negotiation, B2B contract law, supply chain management, and market analysis.
