Shift Incharge / Engineer – Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I)
Steel Manufacturing Plant
Position Summary
The E&I Shift Incharge/Engineer ensures uninterrupted plant operations by managing electrical and instrumentation maintenance during a specific shift. This role focuses on minimizing downtime, maximizing equipment reliability, and enforcing strict safety protocols. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key Responsibilities
Operational & Maintenance Management
  • Shift Supervision: Lead shift technicians and electricians to execute planned and breakdown maintenance activities.
  • Breakdown Resolution: Troubleshoot and rectify electrical and instrumentation failures swiftly to minimize production loss.
  • Routine Inspections: Conduct regular shift patrols and preventive maintenance checks on critical plant equipment.
  • Process Optimization: Monitor automation systems to ensure optimal process control and parameter accuracy. [1, 2, 3]
Technical Oversight (Electrical)
  • Power Distribution: Oversee HT/LT power distribution systems, transformers, switchgears, and MCC/PCC panels.
  • Drive Systems: Maintain and troubleshoot AC/DC drives, VVVF drives, and high-capacity motors.
  • Substation Control: Monitor substation equipment, UPS systems, battery banks, and emergency diesel generators.
Technical Oversight (Instrumentation & Automation)
  • Automation Systems: Monitor and diagnose faults in PLCs (DCS/SCADA), IO modules, and network communication protocols.
  • Field Instrumentation: Calibrate, maintain, and repair control valves, transmitters (pressure, flow, temperature), and sensors.
  • Weighing & Lab Systems: Ensure accuracy of electronic weighbridges, belt weighers, and lab testing equipment. [1]
Safety, Compliance & Documentation
  • Permit to Work (PTW): Issue, verify, and close electrical isolation permits (LOTO) to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Shift Logging: Maintain detailed shift logs, breakdown reports, and history cards in the CMMS/ERP system.
  • Safety Audits: Enforce the usage of PPE and ensure compliance with statutory electrical safety regulations.
  • Handover Protocol: Conduct smooth shift handovers, highlighting pending jobs and critical abnormalities to the incoming shift. [1, 2]
Qualifications and Experience
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree / Diploma in Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation Engineering.
  • Experience: 5 To 8 years of hands-on shift maintenance experience in a Steel Melting Shop (SMS), Rolling Mill, Blast Furnace, or Sponge Iron Plant.
  • Certifications: Supervisor Competency Certificate (Electrical) is highly preferred. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Required Technical Skills
  • Proficient in reading electrical schematics, SLDs, and P&ID diagrams.
  • Hands-on programming and troubleshooting skills for major PLC brands (e.g., Siemens, Rockwell, ABB).
  • Deep understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic proportional control systems used in steel manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with SAP-PM or similar maintenance management software modules. [1]
