Job Description:
A Project Manager in a steel company directs capital projects, plant expansions, and structural fabrication or erection. They oversee end-to-end execution, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget by managing engineering teams, procurement, quality assurance, and on-site contractors. Key Responsibilities
- Project Planning & Execution: Define project scope, goals, and deliverables. Develop comprehensive schedules using software like MS Project or Primavera. [1, 2]
- Resource & Vendor Management: Determine manpower, equipment, and material requirements. Select and negotiate contracts with sub-contractors and suppliers. [1, 2, 3]
- Financial Oversight: Develop project budgets, track expenditures, forecast costs, and manage change orders to ensure maximum cost-effectiveness. [1, 2]
- Engineering Coordination: Oversee basic and detailed engineering across civil, structural, mechanical, and automation disciplines. Review and approve engineering drawings and specifications. [1]
- Quality & Safety Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to Quality Assurance Plans (QAP) and safety/environmental regulations across all manufacturing and installation phases. [1, 2]
- Stakeholder Communication: Act as the primary liaison between senior management, clients, design teams, and external contractors, providing regular progress updates. [1, 2]
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Construction Management (B.E./B.Tech).
- Experience: Typically 10+ years of project management experience within a steel manufacturing plant, structural steel fabrication facility, or heavy industrial construction setting.
- Technical Skills: Advanced ability to read and interpret technical specifications, engineering drawings, and fabrication blueprints. (Knowledge of Tekla Structures or AutoCAD is highly advantageous for detailing-focused roles).
- Certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP) or Six Sigma certification is highly desirable.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional conflict resolution, strong multitasking abilities, and proficient negotiation and leadership skills. [1, 2, 3, 4]
