Job Description:
The 2nd Hand Technician – AOD supports the operation of the AOD converter used for refining stainless steel by removing carbon, sulfur, and impurities using oxygen and argon blowing. The role assists the 1st Hand Operator in furnace operation, monitoring process parameters, ensuring safe operation, and maintaining product quality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in operating the AOD converter during steel refining cycles
- Support oxygen, argon, and nitrogen gas blowing operations as per process requirements
- Monitor furnace conditions such as:
- Temperature
- Carbon level
- Chemical composition
- Assist in charging of hot metal, scrap, and alloys into the converter
- Support slag formation and removal operations
- Coordinate with crane operators for material handling
- Maintain proper refractory condition observation and report abnormalities
- Follow SOPs for safe operation of AOD furnace
- Assist in sampling of molten metal for lab analysis
- Ensure housekeeping of working area in furnace shop
- Report equipment failures, leaks, or unsafe conditions immediately
- Support shutdown and startup activities of AOD unit
Safety Responsibilities:
- Strict adherence to PPE usage (helmet, face shield, heat-resistant clothing, gloves, safety shoes)
- Follow hot metal handling safety procedures
- Ensure safe distance from molten metal and gas lines
- Participate in safety toolbox talks and training sessions
- Comply with steel plant safety standards and emergency protocols
Required Skills & Knowledge:
- Basic understanding of steelmaking process (AOD/VOD/BOF)
- Knowledge of gas refining (oxygen/argon blowing concept)
- Ability to read basic process parameters
- Familiarity with heavy equipment and crane operations
- Awareness of refractory wear and furnace behavior
Qualifications:
- ITI / Diploma in Mechanical / Metallurgy / Foundry / Chemical Engineering (preferred)
- 2–5 years experience in steel melting shop or AOD operation
