Job Description:
A Pulpit Operator in a steel rolling mill serves as the nerve center of the production line. Working from an elevated, climate-controlled control room (the pulpit), they operate and monitor complex milling, heating, and shaping equipment using Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and SCADA systems. Key Responsibilities
  • System Control: Operate and monitor the hot or cold rolling mill using centralized control desks, adjusting parameters like speed, pressure, temperature, and tension.
  • Process Coordination: Coordinate seamlessly with the Reheating Furnace (RHF), mill stands, shears, and finishing areas to ensure an uninterrupted flow of materials (e.g., rebars, wire rods).
  • Quality Assurance: Monitor each rolling pass and bar to ensure the finished product meets strict dimensional and surface quality standards.
  • Troubleshooting: Watch for alarms, camera feeds, and sensor data to spot jams, overheating, or defects, and apply corrective adjustments immediately.
  • Documentation: Log instrument readings, production metrics, and equipment downtime into system databases. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Typical Requirements & Qualifications
  • Education: Diploma or ITI in Mechanical, Electrical, or Metallurgical Engineering.
  • Experience: Typically 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience in a steel rolling mill or heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Skills: Strong understanding of metal rolling processes, proficiency with PLC/SCADA control systems, and excellent spatial awareness. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Working Conditions
The role requires working in rotating shifts within a loud and high-temperature environment, though the operator sits in a secure, climate-controlled pulpit. [1, 2, 3, 4]
