Job Description:

A Lab Incharge for a Rolling Mill and Pipe Mill leads the quality control (QC) team to ensure raw materials and finished steel products meet strict chemical, mechanical, and physical standards. They oversee testing operations, manage lab equipment, and maintain documentation to prevent product defects and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. [1]

Key Responsibilities

1. Quality Control & Testing

Conduct physical and mechanical testing on finished goods (e.g., TMT bars, steel pipes, tubes).
Perform destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT), such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hydrostatic/ultrasonic testing.
Analyze raw materials (billets, skelp) and in-process materials for chemical composition using Spectrometers.
Ensure products comply with national and international standards (e.g., IS codes, ISO, NABL). [1, 2, 3, 4]

2. Process & Defect Analysis

Collaborate with production and rolling mill operators to investigate the root cause of surface defects, dimensional inaccuracies, or weld failures in pipes.
Provide real-time feedback and corrective actions to the shop floor to minimize material wastage and prevent rejections. [1, 2, 3, 4]

3. Equipment Management & Calibration

Oversee the routine calibration, maintenance, and verification of lab instruments (UTM, Spectrometers, Hardness Testers) to ensure accurate and reliable testing data.
Maintain an adequate inventory of chemical reagents, consumables, and testing spare parts. [1, 2, 3]

4. Team Leadership & Documentation

Train, mentor, and supervise lab technicians and junior chemists.
Maintain accurate test reports, certificates of analysis (CoA), and shift logs for dispatch and customer audits.
Enforce strict laboratory safety and housekeeping protocols (e.g., proper chemical disposal, 5S principles). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Desired Qualifications & Skills

Education: B.Sc / M.Sc in Inorganic/Analytical Chemistry or B.E. / B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering.
Experience: 7 to 10 years of progressive experience in a metallurgical laboratory, specifically within a steel rolling mill or pipe mill environment.
Technical Skills: Deep understanding of steel manufacturing processes, chemical analysis techniques, and physical property testing.
Soft Skills: Strong analytical capabilities, leadership, and clear communication to liaise between production, quality, and dispatch teams. [1, 2]
