Job Description:
A Stand Fitter for Roll Shop Management specializes in the precise assembly, maintenance, and preparation of rolling mill stands, chocks, bearings, and guiding equipment. They are essential in steel manufacturing to ensure the roll sets are accurately built to specifications, minimizing mill downtime and ensuring product quality. Core Job Responsibilities
- Stand Assembly & Disassembly: Assemble/disassemble rolling mill stands, including rolls, bearings, chocks, and spindles in the roll shop.
- Guide Assembly & Setting: Assemble and pre-set entry/delivery guides (static and roller) according to pass design, rolling schedules, and product sizes.
- Maintenance & Inspection: Inspect rolls and guide components for wear or damage, replacing parts such as bushings and fasteners.
- Roll Prep & Final Checks: Perform final checks of roll builds, water spray systems, and tool tightening before releasing the stand to the mill.
- Troubleshooting & Repairs: Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair malfunctions in stands and guide equipment.
- Operation & Safety: Operate jib/overhead cranes for moving heavy equipment, ensuring compliance with Health, Safety, and Environment (HSEQ) standards.
Key Requirements
- Experience: Usually 2–5+ years in roll shop operations (often specific to section or steel mills).
- Technical Skills: Strong ability to read engineering drawings/blueprints.
- Knowledge: Expertise in roll build procedures, bearings, and section mill tackle.
- Qualifications: ITI Fitter certificate or equivalent mechanical qualification.
- Physical Stamina: Capable of working in a demanding, high-heat, and fast-paced environment.

- Minimizing roll change time ("quick changeover").
- Reduction of roll-related cobbles and guide-related breakdowns.
