Job Description:
A Lathe Machine Operator in the HDPE/PVC pipe industry is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining lathe machines to cut, thread, chamfer, and finish plastic pipes and associated fittings. They ensure that pipes meet precise diameter, thickness, and quality standards, working closely with extrusion lines to ensure consistent production. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Set-Up & Operation: Set up manual or CNC lathes for cutting, turning, boring, threading, facing, and chamfering HDPE/PVC pipes, specifically managing specialized plastic pipe tooling.
- Cutting & Finishing: Cut pipes to required lengths and create chamfers (bevels) on pipe ends for proper socket welding or jointing.
- Quality Control: Inspect finished pipes using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers) to verify conformance with specifications, including diameter and wall thickness tolerances.
- Troubleshooting: Monitor machine performance and troubleshoot issues with cutting speeds, depths, and tool settings to ensure smooth production.
- Maintenance: Perform routine preventive maintenance on lathes, such as cleaning, lubricating, and replacing tools (drills, taps) to avoid downtime.
- Safety & Housekeeping: Adhere to safety protocols, including wearing PPE, keeping the work area clean, and handling plastic scraps properly.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 2–5+ years of experience in plastic extrusion or pipe manufacturing.
- Education: ITI or Diploma in Turner/Machinist/Plastic Technology (e.g., CIPET).
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of machine drawings, fits, and tolerances.
- Skills: Strong mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity for handling heavy pipes, and proficiency in using precision measuring tools.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods and lift heavy materials.
