Job Description:
A Purchase Officer for a ferro alloys plant manages the end-to-end procurement of essential raw materials (e.g., manganese ore, chrome ore, quartz), reductants, electrodes, and consumables. Their primary goal is to ensure uninterrupted plant operations while optimizing costs and maintaining high-quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Procurement & Sourcing
- Source and procure bulk raw materials (L.C. & H.C. Ferro Chrome, Ferro Manganese, Ferro Silicon), fluxes, and consumables according to production requirements.
- Develop and manage a reliable, cost-effective vendor base both domestically and internationally.
- Monitor global/local market trends for ferro alloys, metals, and scrap to forecast prices and plan purchasing strategies effectively.
2. Negotiation & Vendor Management
- Negotiate the best prices, payment terms, and delivery schedules with suppliers without compromising on material quality.
- Conduct regular vendor evaluations to ensure suppliers meet delivery timelines, quality specifications, and compliance standards.
- Resolve any issues related to shortages, damages, or defective materials with vendors.
3. Supply Chain & Logistics Management
- Coordinate with production and planning departments to create procurement plans based on plant consumption rates.
- Manage import/export documentation, coordinate with Clearing and Forwarding (CHA) agents, and handle shipping or Letter of Credit (L/C) management.
- Track in-transit shipments to ensure the timely arrival of materials and prevent production halts.
4. Inventory & Compliance
- Maintain accurate procurement records, purchase orders, and contracts within company databases (e.g., ERP/SAP systems).
- Assist in inventory control by preventing both stock-outs and overstocking of critical plant spares and raw materials.
- Ensure all procured materials comply with industry quality standards and environmental/safety regulations.
Key Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Materials Management, or a related field (A degree or diploma in Metallurgical Engineering is highly advantageous).
- Experience: Typically 5 to 7+ years of procurement experience, with a proven track record in the metals, steel, or ferro alloys industry.
- Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in ERP systems (SAP MM, Oracle), MS Office (specifically Excel for data analysis), and procurement software.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional negotiation and contract management skills, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and excellent cross-functional communication.
- Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of raw materials used in ferro alloy production, electrode management, and bulk material logistics.
