Job Description:
A Shift Incharge - SMS (Steel Melting Shop) oversees daily production, safety, and operational efficiency during their shift to meet output targets. They manage staff, monitor furnace/CCM parameters (EAF, IF, LRF), troubleshoot breakdowns, and ensure compliance with SOPs and quality standards to minimize downtime.
Key Responsibilities of a Shift Incharge - SMS
- Production Management: Responsible for achieving daily production tonnage targets, managing raw material charging (scrap, ferroalloys), and managing the melt cycle.
- Process Control: Monitor and adjust furnace temperature, power consumption, voltage, and slag chemistry in EAF/Induction Furnaces (IF) and Continuous Casting Machines (CCM).
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) protocols, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) compliance, 5S, and lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Equipment & Troubleshooting: Quickly identify and resolve operational breakdowns in furnaces (EAF/IF), Ladle Furnaces (LF), and CCM to ensure maximum uptime.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, train, and assign tasks to operator and workers to maintain efficient workflow and shift handover management.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate shift log books, production reports, raw material usage records, and incident reports.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Diploma or B.E./B. Tech in Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Chemical Engineering.
- Experience: Generally 10-15 years in the SMS area of a steel plant.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, heavy-duty machinery, and process knowledge.
Typical Shift Structure & Reporting
- Shift Types: Often operates in three shifts (A, B, C) to ensure 24/7 production, usually in 8-hour rotations.
- Reporting: Reports to the Departmental Head or Plant Manager.
