Job Description:
A Civil Engineer in the manufacture of refractory ceramic products specializes in the infrastructure, structural design, maintenance, and material installation required for high-temperature manufacturing environments. They are responsible for the structural integrity of kilns, furnaces, and factory buildings, ensuring they withstand extreme heat, thermal shock, and chemical erosion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Kiln and Furnace Construction/Maintenance: Design, install, and repair refractory linings (bricks, castables) in furnaces and kilns.
  • Structural Design & Analysis: Perform structural calculations for industrial machinery foundations, chimneys, and structural steel supporting refractory linings.
  • Thermal Expansion Management: Design to accommodate severe expansion/contraction, ensuring lining stability during firing cycles.
  • Raw Material Handling Infrastructure: Design and maintain systems for storing and handling heavy raw materials (clay, alumina, magnesite).
  • Quality Control & Inspection: Perform inspections of finished refractory bricks, assessing dimensional accuracy, density, and cold crushing strength (CCS).
  • Project Management: Supervise contractors during plant maintenance shutdowns (relining) to ensure safety and quality standards.
  • Troubleshooting: Analyze root causes of refractory failures (e.g., erosion, spalling) and implement corrective structural measures. 
     
Required Technical Skills
  • Materials Science Knowledge: Understanding properties of fireclay, alumina, mullite, magnesite, and silica.
  • Structural Design Software: Proficiency in AutoCAD, STAAD.Pro, or FEA software.
  • Refractory Application Techniques: Expertise in bricklaying, gunning, or casting techniques.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Knowledge of safety codes (e.g., ASTM, API, ISO, or relevant local building codes). 
     
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or Ceramic Engineering.
  • Experience: Usually 1-5 years of experience in heavy manufacturing, petrochemical, steel, or refractory industries. 
     
Typical Daily Activities
  • Conducting reliability surveys to monitor the health of refractory linings.
  • Inspecting raw material consistency and grain size in the mixing machine.
  • Reviewing vendor technical offers for refractory materials.
  • Supervising the heating and drying schedules of kilns.
  • Drafting daily reports on production and maintenance for management.
