Job Description:
A Turbine Field Operator (F/O) in a power plant is a critical, hands-on role responsible for the safe and efficient local operation, monitoring, and maintenance of turbine equipment and its auxiliary systems. They work directly in the plant (in the "field") rather than in the control room (DCS), performing physical inspections and adjustments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Monitoring: Continuously inspects turbine systems—including lube oil, seal oil, condensers, and cooling towers—for proper functioning.
  • Startup/Shutdown Procedures: Assists the control room in carrying out safe equipment startup, shutdown, and changeover as per Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Field Adjustments: Manually adjusts controls (valves, pumps, dampers) to maintain required temperature, pressure, and vacuum levels, following plant loads.
  • Troubleshooting & Inspection: Identifies deviations, leaks, or anomalies (vibrations, abnormal sounds) and takes corrective action.
  • Maintenance Support: Performs routine maintenance, cleaning, and equipment isolation for maintenance teams, ensuring compliance with work permit systems.
  • Record Keeping: Maintains logs of instrument readings, operational parameters, and shift logs during the handover process.

Typical Requirements
  • Education: ITI, Diploma, or B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience: Generally 2–5 years of experience in power plant operations (thermal or gas).
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of rotating equipment, turbine auxiliaries, and basic mechanical systems.
  • Skills: Troubleshooting, reading technical drawings (P&IDs), and proficiency in safety protocols.

Job Context
  • Environment: High-temperature/pressure industrial environment requiring strictly safe work practices.
  • Reporting: Reports to the Turbine DCS Operator, Shift In-charge, or Control Room Engineer.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy objects (sometimes 50-100 lbs as a team), move around frequently, and work in varied plant conditions.
