Job Description:
A Deputy Manager (Dy. Manager) or Assistant Manager (AM) in a steel company acts as the crucial middle-layer link between senior management (Head/AVP) and ground-level operators. They are primarily responsible for ensuring operational efficiency, meeting production targets, enforcing safety, and managing team activities. A Deputy Manager is typically senior to an Assistant Manager, often second-in-command, and acts as a backup for the manager. 
Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the job description (JD) based on roles in production, quality, and procurement.
 
Core Responsibilities (All Departments)
  • Operational Oversight: Manage daily shift operations (production, maintenance, or procurement) to meet set KPIs, ensuring smooth workflow.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise plant personnel, including shift supervisors and workers, providing technical guidance.
  • Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety (OSHA/local regulations) and quality standards (ISO).
  • Reporting & MIS: Prepare daily/monthly production, maintenance, or MIS reports (e.g., using SAP) for senior management.
  • Process Improvement: Identify gaps, troubleshoot operational issues, and implement cost-saving initiatives (e.g., Lean manufacturing).
  • Interdepartmental Coordination: Collaborate with other departments (e.g., maintenance working with production) to minimize downtime. 
     
Specific Functional Roles
 
1. Production/Operation (Rolling Mill, SMS, DRI)
  • Manage shift-wise production of TMT bars, steel tubes, or alloys.
  • Control process parameters (e.g., temperatures in smelting) to meet product quality.
  • Ensure optimum raw material usage and manage inventory levels. 
     
2. Quality Assurance (QA/QC)
  • Conduct testing and inspections of finished goods and raw materials.
  • Resolve quality deviations and implement corrective actions. 
     
3. Procurement/Materials Management
  • Manage raw material sourcing, vendor negotiations, and logistics.
  • Manage procurement activities through ERP (SAP MM module). 
    Key Skills and Qualifications
  • Education: B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgy, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience: 3–5 years (AM) to 5–8 years (Dy. Manager) in a manufacturing plant.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of steel manufacturing processes (e.g., SMS, Rolling Mill, Blast Furnace).
  • Software Skills: Proficiency in MS Office and SAP (ERP).
  • Soft Skills: Strong leadership, decision-making, pressure handling, and interpersonal communication.
