Job Description:
A Fitter in a steel company (such as a rolling mill or integrated steel plant) is a skilled tradesperson responsible for assembling, installing, maintaining, and repairing heavy machinery, structural steel components, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems. They ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently in high-demand industrial environments.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Fabrication and Assembly: Cutting, shaping, drilling, and grinding steel components using shears, grinders, and oxy-fuel cutting torches to meet exact specifications.
- Installation & Alignment: Assembling structural steel and aligning moving parts (pumps, blowers, fans) and ensuring proper alignment of mechanical systems.
- Maintenance & Repair: Performing routine checks (preventative maintenance), dismantling equipment to identify faults, and repairing or replacing broken components such as bearings, gearboxes, and pumps.
- Hydraulic/Pneumatic Systems: Identifying and rectifying faults in hydraulic systems, including checking for leaks, changing seals, and assembling pipes.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Reading technical drawings, schematics, and blue prints to guide assembly, layout, and installation.
- Safety Compliance: Adhering to strict safety protocols (OSHA, lockout/tagout) and wearing PPE while working with heavy, hot machinery.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education/Certification: ITI Fitter certificate (National Trade Certificate - NTC or National Apprenticeship Certificate - NAC) is usually required.
- Experience: Proven experience as a fitter in heavy industry, manufacturing, or steel plants.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in hand/power tools, gas cutting, tack welding, and basic machining (lathe, drilling).
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work long hours, stand for extended periods, and lift heavy items.
Typical Work Context
- Environment: Often loud, hot, and industrial, working both in fabrication shops and directly on production lines.
- Shift Work: Usually required, including night shifts and weekend work for maintenance shutdowns.
Common Certifications
- ITI in Fitter Trade.
- Relevant safety training (e.g., Working at Heights, Confined Space Entry)
