Job Description:
A Quality Control (QC) Chemist in a steel company analyzes raw materials (iron ore, scrap, coal), in-process samples (molten metal), and finished products (billets, TMT bars) to ensure compliance with standards (e.g., IS 1786). Key duties include operating spectrometers for chemical composition analysis, maintaining lab equipment, and providing real-time data to operations teams.
Core Responsibilities
- Sample Testing: Analyze raw materials (sponge iron, ferro alloys), slag, and molten metal from the Steel Melting Shop (SMS).
- Analytical Techniques: Utilize spectrometers, wet chemistry, titrations, and physical testing to determine chemical composition, carbon content, and tensile strength.
- Quality Reporting: Document all test results in compliance with ISO/industry quality management standards.
- Operational Support: Provide real-time data to the production team for heat correction, ensuring steel meets required standards (e.g., IS 2830).
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate results.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to safety standards (GLP - Good Laboratory Practices) when handling hazardous materials.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree (B.Sc.) in Chemistry, or a Diploma in Metallurgy/Chemical Engineering.
- Experience: 3+ years of experience in a steel plant or SMS laboratory is preferred, though knowledgeable freshers are sometimes accepted.
- Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with ASTM/ISO standards and wet chemical analysis.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating instruments like spectrometers and wet lab tools.
Physical and Working Conditions
- Environment: Regular testing in laboratory settings, often located within the industrial plant.
- Shift Work: Typically requires 12-hour rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

- Effective communication for reporting deviations to operations.
