Job Description:
An X-Ray Technician in a hospital produces diagnostic images (X-rays, CT scans) to help physicians diagnose injuries and diseases, working in departments like radiology, emergency, or operating theaters. Key duties include positioning patients, operating imaging equipment, following radiation safety protocols (ALARA), and ensuring high-quality images while minimizing radiation exposure.
Key Responsibilities
- Imaging Procedures: Perform high-quality diagnostic X-rays and/or CT scans as ordered by physicians.
- Patient Care: Position patients for optimal imaging, explain procedures to reduce anxiety, and ensure patient safety and comfort.
- Safety & Protection: Apply lead shields, maintain safe radiation levels, and adhere to infection control protocols.
- Equipment Management: Operate, clean, and troubleshoot imaging equipment, reporting malfunctions promptly.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate, detailed records of procedures and ensure image quality for radiologist review.
- Collaboration: Work closely with radiologists and healthcare teams in operating rooms or emergency, often handling urgent, high-volume, or bedside imaging.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Technology.
- Certification: Certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is often required.
- Licensure: Appropriate state licensure to practice.
- Skills: Strong technical knowledge of radiation physics, anatomy, and imaging equipment.
- Physical Ability: Ability to stand for long periods and lift/position patients.
Work Environment
- Hospitals, including operating theaters and emergency departments.
- High-pressure, fast-paced environment demanding speed and precision.
- Potential for shift work, including nights, weekends, and on-call hours.
