Job Description:
A hospital Dialysis Technician (or Hemodialysis Technician) operates machines to treat patients with kidney failure, focusing on setting up equipment, monitoring vitals, and ensuring safety. Key responsibilities include sterilizing equipment, inserting needles, administering medications like heparin, and documenting patient treatment. They require strong communication, attention to detail, and certification (CCHT).
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Setup & Maintenance: Prepare, sterilize, and operate hemodialysis machines (dialyzers, tubing, water treatment systems).
- Patient Care: Connect (cannulate) and disconnect patients to the machine, monitor vitals, and calculate fluid removal.
- Monitoring & Safety: Monitor patients for complications during treatment and respond to alarms or emergency situations.
- Administration: Administer local anesthetics and heparin as part of the dialysis procedure.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate patient records, flow sheets, and medical records.
- Education: Explain procedures and equipment to patients and families.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED.
- Certification: Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) is usually required.
- Training: Completion of an accredited dialysis technician training program.
- Skills: Strong technical aptitude, ability to work under pressure, good interpersonal skills, and basic life support (BLS) certification.
Work Environment
- Settings: Hospitals, specialized dialysis clinics, or patient homes.
- Physical Demands: Standing for long periods, bending, and lifting (e.g., handling heavy dialysis equipment).
- Shifts: Often work long 12-hour shifts or varied hours to accommodate patient scheduling.
