Job Description:
A Purchase Officer in a steel company (manufacturing, fabrication, or raw materials) is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and acquiring raw materials (iron ore, coal, scrap), industrial consumables, spares, and machinery to ensure uninterrupted production at optimal costs. This role involves end-to-end procurement, from vendor evaluation to inventory control and logistics.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Sourcing & Vendor Management: Identify, qualify, and maintain relationships with reliable domestic/international suppliers for raw materials (steel plates, coils, ferroalloys) and spares.
- Negotiation & Cost Control: Negotiate price, payment terms, and delivery schedules to secure best-in-class rates and achieve budget targets.
- Procurement Operations: Generate Purchase Orders (POs) in ERP systems, track delivery progress, and verify received goods for accuracy and quality.
- Inventory Control: Monitor raw material stock levels to prevent stockouts or over-ordering (min/max management).
- Logistics & Documentation: Coordinate logistics for material receipt, manage MTC (Material Test Certificate) reconciliation, and handle EXIM documentation if applicable.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with production, quality assurance, and finance teams to align procurement with operational needs.
- Market Intelligence: Monitor market trends for raw material price fluctuations (e.g., LME rates, metal prices).
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical/Metallurgy preferred) or Business/Supply Chain Management.
- Experience: 2-5+ years of experience in purchasing, specifically within the steel, fabrication, or heavy manufacturing industry.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP is highly preferred), MS Office (Excel), and understanding of IS/ISO standards.
- Soft Skills: Strong negotiation, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with ferroalloys, power plant equipment, and industrial consumables.
