Job Description:
A Vice President (VP) of Manufacturing for a Shipping Container company is a senior executive responsible for the entire production lifecycle, from raw material sourcing to the delivery of finished containers. This role ensures that manufacturing operations are safe, efficient, cost-effective, and meet international quality standards (such as ISO). The VP typically reports to the CEO or COO and plays a critical role in scaling production capacity to meet market growth. 
 
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Production Oversight: Manage end-to-end manufacturing processes, including metal fabrication, welding, painting, and assembly.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop manufacturing strategies to increase efficiency, optimize production output, and reduce costs.
  • Supply Chain Management: Manage relationships with raw material suppliers (steel, paint) and oversee logistics for both inbound materials and outbound, finished containers.
  • Quality Control & Safety: Establish rigorous QC standards (e.g., seaworthy certification, watertight testing) and ensure strict compliance with health and safety protocols (OSHA, etc.).
  • Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) & Budgeting: Formulate and manage the manufacturing budget, including equipment procurement, facility maintenance, and headcount optimization.
  • Leadership & Development: Mentor and lead manufacturing professionals, managers, and factory personnel, fostering a culture of continuous improvement (Lean Manufacturing).
  • Technology & Modernization: Modernize manufacturing facilities by identifying, justifying, and implementing new technologies, automation, or software systems. 
     
 
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Operations Management, or related field; MBA is highly preferred.
  • Experience: 25+ years of experience in manufacturing, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role, preferably in heavy industrial, steel fabrication, or intermodal logistics.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of metal fabrication, production scheduling, quality systems, and supply chain logistics.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to manage a large, diverse team and drive operational excellence.
  • Strategic Acumen: Strong business acumen, financial literacy, and experience managing P&L responsibilities. 
     
 
Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Production Volume: Number of TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) produced.
  • Cost Control: Unit cost reduction and material cost productivity.
  • Quality Metrics: Scrap/rework rates and customer quality audit results.
  • Safety Record: Reduction in incident rates (LTIR).
  • On-Time Delivery: Delivery performance to shipping line customers.
