This is a field-based, hands-on role requiring technical expertise in mechanical/electrical equipment and a strong focus on safety, particularly around high-capacity conveyors, crushers, and pumping systems.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Operations Monitoring: Monitor CHP/AHP equipment (conveyors, crushers, feeders, slurry pumps, compressors) through site observations to ensure 24/7 availability.
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance on equipment such as belt conveyors, stacker-reclaimers, wagon tipplers, ash water pumps, and vacuum systems.
- Technical Support: Inspect and troubleshoot mechanical failures, blockages, belt failures, ash choking, and instrumentation issues.
- Contractor & Resource Management: Manage contractor teams for daily activities, including ash disposal, coal handling, and housekeeping (5S standards).
- Safety Compliance: Conduct Tool Box Talks (TBT), implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensure correct use of PPEs, and enforce safe clearance for maintenance.
- Documentation: Prepare daily/monthly operational reports, maintenance logs, and checklists for statutory compliance.
- Process Improvement: Identify bottlenecks in coal handling or ash evacuation and recommend improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
Required Technical Skills and Experience
- Experience: Generally 3–7 years in coal/ash handling operations, preferably in a steel plant or thermal power plant (e.g., 300 MW to 660 MW units).
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.E./B.Tech) or Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- System Knowledge: Deep understanding of pneumatic conveying, high-pressure slurry pumps, hydraulic systems, and ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator) systems.
- Technical Skills: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, layout diagrams, and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&ID).
Typical Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Shift Work: The role frequently requires working in rotating shifts (including nights).

- Physical Fitness: Ability to move around a large plant, climb structures, and work in challenging environments.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- System availability and reduction in downtime.
- Compliance with environmental and safety norms (ash slurry management).
- Maintenance budget control and spares management.
