Job Description:
A Quality Control (QC) Operator in a steel company is responsible for inspecting, testing, and verifying that raw materials, in-process products, and finished steel products (such as coils, bars, plates, or pipes) meet specified standards, grade requirements, and customer specifications. They act as the final check before materials leave the production floor to ensure quality integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspecting Raw Materials: Verify the quality of incoming raw materials (steel scrap, iron ore, alloys) to ensure they meet specifications before they are used in production.
- In-Process Monitoring: Monitor steel manufacturing stages—including casting, rolling, and heating—to ensure process parameters (like temperature) are within established limits.
- Dimensional & Surface Inspection: Perform physical checks on steel products for precise dimensions (thickness, width, length), surface defects (scratches, rust, pits), and shape anomalies (camber, twist).
- Mechanical & Chemical Testing: Conduct mechanical tests (tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, bending) and assist in chemical analysis to verify steel grade conformity.
- Documentation & Reporting: Meticulously record inspection results, test data, and non-conformances in reports or laboratory systems.
- Handling Non-Conformance: Identify and tag products that fail to meet specifications, preventing them from being processed or shipped, and initiating non-conformance reports (NCR).
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required; a technical diploma in Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar field is preferred.
- Experience: 3+ years of experience in quality inspection within a steel plant, foundry, rolling mill, or heavy metal fabrication environment.
- Technical Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and standards (e.g., IS, ASTM, ISO).
- Proficiency in using precision measurement tools (calipers, gauges, micrometers).
- Basic knowledge of metallurgy and steel grades.
- Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, analytical skills for interpreting data, and effective communication skills to report issues to production supervisors.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods, work in high-temperature environments, and lift heavy materials (up to 50 lbs).
Typical Work Environment
- This is a manufacturing-based role, usually requiring shift work (including nights, weekends, and holidays) to maintain 24/7 production cycles.
- Environment includes exposure to heavy machinery, high temperatures, noise, and dust, necessitating strict adherence to safety protocols (PPE).
