Job Description:
A Raw Material Supervisor in a steel company manages the receipt, storage, handling, and inventory of raw materials (such as iron ore, coal, coke, scrap, and ferroalloys) to ensure continuous production flow. They ensure materials meet quality standards, manage stock levels, and oversee safety in storage areas. 
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Receiving & Inspection: Oversee the receipt, unloading, and inspection of materials to ensure they match purchase orders (PO), invoice details, and quality specifications.
  • Inventory Control & Stock Management: Maintain accurate records of raw material inventory, conduct physical inventory audits, and reconcile stocks to prevent shortages or excess.
  • Production Support & Issuing: Issue raw materials to production departments (e.g., blast furnace, SMS) based on production scheduling.
  • Supplier Coordination: Coordinate with procurement teams regarding material quality, shortages, or damaged goods.
  • Supervision of Handling: Supervise material handlers and heavy equipment operators, directing daily workflows, and managing storage facilities (silos, yard).
  • Documentation & Reporting: Prepare Goods Receipt Notes (GRN), Material Issue Vouchers, and daily, weekly, or monthly stock reports.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols (e.g., OSHA, PPE) within the storage yard and in handling industrial bulk materials. 
     
Required Qualifications
  • Education: A Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Material Management, or a related field (e.g., BSc Chemistry/Science).
  • Experience: Generally requires 2–5 years of experience in raw material management within the steel, iron, or heavy engineering industry.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP/Oracle/M3).
    • Strong MS Office skills (Excel & Word).
    • Knowledge of FIFO (First-In-First-Out) inventory techniques.
    • Familiarity with operating heavy equipment (cranes, forklifts) is often preferred. 
       
Typical Working Conditions
  • Work is conducted on-site, usually at a steel plant, involving time in both an office (for ERP) and industrial outdoor/workshop environments.
  • Often involves shift work, including nights and weekends, to support 24/7 production.
