Job Description:
A Chief Security Officer (CSO) in a steel company is a senior executive responsible for creating a robust security framework that addresses physical security, asset protection, and increasingly, cybersecurity of industrial control systems. They protect company assets, data, and personnel by developing safety protocols, managing risk, and responding to incidents. In the steel industry, this role focuses heavily on preventing theft, vandalism, industrial espionage, and ensuring safety in high-risk industrial environments. 
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Security Planning: Design security strategy, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aligned with industrial best practices.
  • Physical Security & Asset Protection: Oversee access control for staff and contractors, plant perimeter security, CCTV surveillance, and material management (raw materials, finished products).
  • Industrial Vigilance & Intelligence: Develop an intelligence network to gain prior information regarding potential security threats (e.g., labor unrest, theft, insurgent groups).
  • Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Conduct regular security audits, vulnerability assessments, and implement measures to reduce operational security risks.
  • Emergency Response & Crisis Management: Establish emergency plans for fire, sabotage, or industrial disasters, and lead incident response.
  • Technology & Automation: Drive Security Automation initiatives (CCTV, PIDS, AI-powered analytics) to enhance productivity and reduce costs.
  • External Liaison: Maintain strong relationships with law enforcement, government officials, and local authorities.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, train, and supervise a large team of security personnel and vendors. 
     
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience: Proven experience (often 5+ years) in a leadership role within industrial security, manufacturing, or defense, with a minimum of 3-5 years in a corporate security role.
  • Background: Often requires a background as a commissioned officer (e.g., Army Lt. Col.) or significant experience in large-scale industrial security.
  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of physical security principles, Industrial Control Systems (ICS) security, and relevant Indian regulations (e.g., Companies Act 2013).
  • Certifications: CPP (Certified Protection Professional), PSP (Physical Security Professional), or CISM are preferred.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills to interact with the executive team and board. 
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Zero Pilferage: Achieving a high-security environment with minimal loss of raw materials or finished steel products.
  • Incident Response Time: Minimizing the time taken to respond to security incidents.
  • Safety Compliance: Maintaining high adherence to safety standards, reducing security-related safety risks.
