Job Description:
The Timmer Man (Refractory) is responsible for the lining, repair, and maintenance of the refractory lining in Induction Furnaces and Ladles within the Steel Melting Shop (SMS). They ensure the furnace lining is installed correctly, maintained during operation, and repaired quickly to prevent breakouts, maintaining operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Furnace Lining Installation: Perform rammed or castable refractory lining for induction furnaces and ladles.
- Sintering and Maintenance: Perform sintering of the lining and monitor it during the melting process to maximize lining life.
- Breakdown Maintenance: Quickly repair lining failures, cracks, or erosion to prevent furnace breakouts.
- Refractory Tools Operation: Use specialized tools such as pneumatic rammers, mixers, and cutting tools to maintain the furnace lining.
- Ladle Maintenance: Ensure the refractory lining of ladles is in good condition for tapping.
- Safety Adherence: Strictly follow safety protocols, including wearing high-temperature protective gear, and managing hazards in the melting area.
Skills and Qualifications
- Education: ITI or Technical certification in refractory lining or similar trades.
- Experience: 5 years of experience in furnace lining/refractory work specifically in a steel melting shop (SMS) environment.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in refractory ramming, gunning, and repairing techniques.
- Physical Strength: Ability to work in high-temperature environments.
Typical Working Conditions
- High-temperature environment (SMS area).
- Shift-based work (24/7 operations).
