Job Description:
A Melter in a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) is a highly skilled industrial role responsible for operating furnaces—typically Induction Furnaces or Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF)—to melt raw materials and refine them into high-quality molten steel.
Key Responsibilities
- Furnace Operation: Operates and controls Induction Furnaces/EAF to melt scrap metal, sponge iron, and pig iron efficiently.
- Quality Control & Metallurgy: Monitors chemical composition, temperature, and steel quality throughout the melting and refining process. Takes samples, analyzes results, and adds ferroalloys to meet specifications.
- Tapping & Charging: Supervises the charging of raw materials and coordinates with crane operators to tap molten metal into ladles.
- Refractory Maintenance: Performs or oversees furnace lining, maintenance, and sintering (lining curing) to prevent equipment failure.
- Safety Adherence: Strictly follows SMS safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment in a high-temperature setting.
- Troubleshooting: Troubleshoots operational issues and identifies process improvements for productivity.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Metallurgy is preferred.
- Experience: Generally requires 5 years of experience in an induction furnace or EAF environment.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of metallurgy, charging techniques, and lining/sintering.
