Job Description:
A Senior Engineer or Assistant Manager (AM) in the SMS LRF (Steel Melting Shop - Ladle Refining Furnace) department of a steel company is responsible for supervising secondary steelmaking operations to ensure high-grade steel production, adhering to safety protocols, and optimizing cost and efficiency. This role requires managing production targets, raw material consumption, and shift operations, generally requiring 4 to 12 years of experience.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Production & Process Management: Oversee daily LRF operations, including ladle furnace refining, ladle and refractory management, and vacuum degassing (VD). Ensure correct ladle metallurgy processes to achieve target chemistry and temperature.
- Quality Control & Refining: Manage the production of various alloy grades (low carbon, medium carbon, stainless steel) ensuring chemical homogeneity and temperature control. Achieve dephosphorization and desulfurization in the ladle.
- Operational Optimization: Focus on reducing raw material consumption, optimizing charge mix, and enhancing refractory life to reduce production costs.
- Shift Supervision: Handle the furnace crew (operators, technicians), coordinate with EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) and CCM (Continuous Casting Machine) departments, and manage 24/7 operations.
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Coordinate with the maintenance team to minimize breakdown time, ensure preventative maintenance of furnace machinery, and maintain a safe working environment.
- Reporting & Compliance: Analyze performance, create Daily/Monthly Operating Reports (MIS), and ensure adherence to ISO 9001/ISO 14001 standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: B.E./B.Tech or Diploma in Metallurgy.
- Experience: 5-10 years for Senior Engineer, and 6-12 years for Assistant Manager positions in a steel plant/SMS environment, specifically with EAF/LRF/VD operations.
- Technical Skills: Sound knowledge of secondary metallurgy, ladle furnace automation (PLC/SCADA), and SAP/ERP systems.
Preferred Skills
- Expertise in alloy grade steelmaking.
- Strong team leadership and ability to handle shop floor manpower.
- Proficiency in process control and troubleshooting.
- Exposure to modern steelmaking technologies and quality systems.

- Reports to: Manager - SMS, Head - SMS, or Deputy General Manager (DGM) - Operations.
- Leads: LRF Operators, Senior Technicians, Fitters, and Melters.
