Job Description:
A Coal Washery Chemist analyzes raw and washed coal, determining moisture, ash, volatile matter, and calorific value to ensure product quality. They conduct proximal/ultimate analyses, operate lab equipment (muffle furnaces, calorimeters), maintain QC standards, and generate compliance reports to optimize washing efficiency.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Sample Management: Collecting, preparing, and processing raw coal, washed coal, and reject samples according to standardized procedures.
- Coal Analysis: Conducting Proximate Analysis (moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon) and Ultimate Analysis.
- Quality Evaluation: Determining Gross Calorific Value (GCV), Total Sulphur, and Ash Fusion Temperature (AFT).
- Washery Optimization: Analyzing washed products to optimize washability and beneficiation processes.
- Lab Maintenance: Operating, calibrating, and maintaining laboratory equipment (e.g., muffle furnaces, Bomb Calorimeters).
- Data Reporting: Maintaining detailed records and reports on chemical analyses, ensuring compliance with NABL or customer specifications.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, or related field (e.g., MSc or BSc in Chemistry).
- Experience: Previous experience in a coal washery, coal laboratory, or mineral processing environment.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in sampling techniques, chemical analysis procedures, and laboratory safety protocols.
- Software Skills: Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Key Performance Indicators:
- Accuracy of coal sampling and analysis.
- Maintenance of laboratory safety and equipment calibration.
- Optimization of washery yields by providing timely lab results.
