Job Description:
A Junior Chemist in a steel manufacturing company performs essential quality control tests, analyzing raw materials (iron ore, coal) and finished products (sponge iron, steel) to ensure safety and quality standards. They operate laboratory instruments (spectrometers, XRF), maintain, document, and interpret data, and prepare samples, under supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Chemical Analysis: Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products (coke, sinter, pig iron) to determine composition, including carbon/sulfur analysis.
- Quality Control: Conduct testing to verify that materials meet strict manufacturing, quality, and safety standards.
- Instrument Operation: Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as XRF spectrometers, proximate analyzers, and gas chromatography instruments.
- Data Management: Record experimental data, maintain accurate laboratory logs, and prepare technical reports.
- Sample Preparation: Prepare reagents and process raw material samples (iron ore, limestone) for analysis.
- Safety Adherence: Follow laboratory safety protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) strictly.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related science field (B.Sc. in Chemistry).
- Experience: Often requires 4-5+ years of experience in an industrial laboratory, specifically steel or chemical plants.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of chemical analysis techniques, including spectrophotometry and physical testing (sieve analysis).
- Skills: Proficiency in MS Office for data entry, strong analytical skills, and good communication skills.
