Job Description:
A Lab Incharge QC (Quality Control) in a steel manufacturing company is a crucial supervisory role responsible for ensuring that raw materials, in-process samples, and finished steel products (such as billets, TMT bars, or structural steel) meet required chemical, mechanical, and physical standards. This position involves managing the laboratory team, overseeing testing operations, and maintaining documentation according to ISO and regulatory standards.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Management: Supervise, train, and manage laboratory technicians, overseeing daily operations and ensuring high-quality standards in sample collection and testing.
- Chemical & Physical Analysis: Oversee testing of raw materials (iron ore, scrap, ferroalloys) and finished steel, conducting qualitative and quantitative tests (chemical analysis, metallurgical testing, tensile strength).
- Instrument Calibration & Maintenance: Ensure spectrometers, hardness testers, universal testing machines (UTM), and other analytical instruments are properly calibrated and maintained.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate, detailed laboratory records, reports, and test results, including the preparation of Mill Test Certificates (MTC).
- Compliance & Audit Management: Ensure the lab adheres to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), safety protocols, and ISO-9001:2015/ISO 17025 standards, leading internal and external audits.
- Process Monitoring & Quality Improvement: Coordinate with production teams to monitor in-process quality, investigate out-of-specification (OOS) results, and identify root causes for defects.
- Inventory Control: Manage lab chemicals, consumables, and glassware inventory.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or Materials Science, or a 3-year technical course in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering.
- Experience: At least 10-15 years of work experience in a laboratory testing environment within a steel plant, rolling mill, or industrial manufacturing unit.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating lab equipment (spectrometer, UTM), knowledge of ASTM/IS codes, and experience with Quality Management Systems (QMS).
- Computer Literacy: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Soft Skills: Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, leadership ability, and effective communication skills.
