Job Description:

A school counselor is a certified mental health professional who supports students' academic, social-emotional, and career development. Key duties include individual and group counseling, facilitating classroom guidance lessons, assisting with college/career planning, mediating conflicts, and collaborating with staff/parents to ensure student well-being and success. 

 
 
Key Roles and Responsibilities
  • Individual Counseling: Conduct one-on-one sessions to address personal challenges, mental health concerns, and behavioral issues.
  • Academic Support: Help students create academic plans, improve study habits, manage time, and track graduation requirements.
  • College and Career Readiness: Guide students in exploring career paths, selecting courses, and assisting with college admissions and scholarships.
  • Social-Emotional Development: Teach social skills, conflict resolution, stress management, and coping techniques.
  • Crisis Management & Prevention: Address immediate mental health crises and provide resources for students in need.
  • Collaboration & Consultation: Work with teachers, parents, and administrators to support student success and improve the school environment.
  • Referrals & Reporting: Connect families to external resources for mental health/substance abuse issues and report suspected cases of abuse or neglect. 
     
Typical Requirements
  • Education: Master’s degree in School Counseling or Psychology (often required), although some roles may accept a Bachelor’s in a relevant field with experience.
  • License/Certification: State-required certification for school counseling.
  • Skills: Active listening, empathy, strong communication, crisis intervention, and conflict mediation skills. 
     
Core Competencies
  • Understanding of human development and developmental needs of students.
  • Knowledge of career assessments and aptitude testing.
  • Proficiency in identifying student behaviors that affect academic performance.
