Job Description:
A Fireman in a steel manufacturing company is a specialized industrial firefighter responsible for preventing, detecting, and extinguishing fires within a high-risk environment. They perform emergency response, operate heavy firefighting apparatus, and conduct routine safety checks on machinery, furnaces, and chemical storage areas to minimize damage to life and equipment.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Emergency Response: Act as a first responder to fire alarms, gas leaks, hazardous spills (HAZMAT), and medical emergencies within the plant.
- Fire Suppression: Extinguish fires using specialized equipment (ladders, hoses, foam systems, and fire extinguishers).
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform daily/regular inspections, cleaning, servicing, and testing of firefighting equipment, fire extinguishers, and hydrants to ensure they are functional.
- Safety Inspections & Prevention: Conduct routine inspections of high-risk areas (reheating furnaces, hazardous materials storage) and hot work areas (welding, cutting) to detect hazards and ensure compliance with safety codes.
- Training & Drills: Participate in mandatory fire safety drills, emergency evacuation training, and refresher courses on firefighting techniques.
- Documentation: Complete fire safety reports, inspection checklists, and report damaged equipment to supervisors.
- Rescue & First Aid: Render first aid to injured personnel and perform rescue operations in high-risk scenarios.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: Minimum Higher Secondary (12th Pass) or equivalent, with a certified firefighting certificate (e.g., NFPA standard training or national/state industrial fire training).
- Experience: 2–5+ years of experience in fire safety, specifically in a steel plant, refinery, or heavy manufacturing industry.
- Physical Fitness: Excellent physical stamina, strength, and ability to work in high-temperature environments, at heights, or in confined spaces while wearing heavy protective clothing (Breathing Apparatus).
- Skills: Strong communication skills (written and spoken), ability to remain calm under pressure, and basic computer proficiency.
- Shifts: Willingness to work on a rotating shift basis (day/night) and available for emergencies (On-call).
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Working in extreme heat near furnaces.
- Frequently lifting objects weighing 50–150 pounds.
- Performing manual labor under strenuous conditions for long periods.
