Job Description:
An Instrument Technician in a steel manufacturing company is responsible for the installation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial measurement and control devices. They ensure that equipment such as sensors, transmitters, and control valves function accurately to monitor processes like pressure, temperature, flow, and level in heavy, high-temperature industrial environments.
Core Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Calibration: Perform routine calibration and troubleshooting of field instruments to ensure precision and prevent production downtime.
- Troubleshooting & Repairs: Diagnose malfunctioning sensors, actuators, and electronic/pneumatic systems, replacing defective components as needed.
- Control Systems Management: Maintain and troubleshoot Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and SCADA systems that regulate production, such as blast furnaces or rolling mills.
- Installation & Commissioning: Install new measurement and control instruments according to technical specifications and safety standards.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to high-temperature industrial safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Documentation: Maintain meticulous records of maintenance activities, calibration logs, and repair history.
Key Technical Skills
- Instrumentation Knowledge: Strong understanding of field instruments including pressure gauges, temperature indicators, flow meters, and control valves.
- Automation Systems: Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA, and DCS systems.
- Diagnostic Tools: Proficiency in using tools like HART communicators, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and calibration equipment.
- Schematic Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), electrical drawings, and technical manuals.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate, Diploma, or BE/B.Tech in Instrumentation, Electronics, or Electrical Engineering.
- Experience: 0–5+ years of experience in heavy manufacturing industries, with a preference for steel plants, blast furnaces, or rolling mills.
- Physical Aptitude: Ability to work in challenging environments, including high temperatures and confined spaces.

- Analytical Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose complex system faults efficiently.
- Attention to Detail: High precision in calibration tasks to avoid process errors.
- Teamwork & Communication: Ability to work closely with operations and engineering teams
