Job Description:
A DCS Engineer for an AFBC (Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustion) boiler in a steel manufacturing plant monitors and controls boiler operations via the Distributed Control System (DCS) to ensure safe, optimal, and reliable steam generation. Responsibilities include managing fuel feeding, air flow, startup/shutdown, alarm response, and troubleshooting, typically requiring a bachelor's degree in engineering and 3–8 years of experience.
Key Job Responsibilities
- DCS Operation: Controlling and monitoring the AFBC boiler, fuel feeding systems, air fans, and feed pumps via the DCS interface.
- Process Optimization: Continuously optimizing boiler efficiency by adjusting fuel-to-air ratios, managing combustion, and controlling steam pressure and temperature.
- Safety & Compliance: Responding to alarms, troubleshooting operational issues (e.g., bed temperature fluctuations), and adhering to safety/environmental regulations.
- Startup/Shutdown: Executing safe, controlled startup and shutdown sequences, including purging and managing startup burners.
- Maintenance Support: Collaborating with field operators for maintenance, troubleshooting instrumentation, and updating control loops.
- Data Logging: Maintaining accurate shift logs, trends, and reports on boiler performance and malfunctions.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, or related).
- Experience: Generally 3–8 years of experience with AFBC/WHRB boiler DCS systems, particularly in a steel or captive power plant setting.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in DCS, PLC, and SCADA systems.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of Fluidized Bed Combustion principles, boiler efficiency calculations, and PID controllers.
- Competencies: Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills.
Key Focus Areas for Steel Companies (e.g., in Chhattisgarh):
- Managing variations in coal quality and bed material.
- Integrating the boiler operation with the captive power plant and downstream steel production processes (e.g., Sponge Iron).
