Job Description:
A Crane Operator in a steel manufacturing plant operates heavy-duty overhead cranes to lift, transport, and position molten metal, raw materials, and finished steel products. They ensure safety during material movement, perform daily inspections, and coordinate with ground crews, requiring specialized knowledge in rigging and heavy lifting in industrial environments.
Core Job Responsibilities:
- Operation: Operate overhead cranes to move heavy loads (billets, scrap, molten metal) using hooks, electromagnets, or grab buckets.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere to strict health, safety, and environmental standards; perform daily pre-shift inspections of cranes, hoisting mechanisms, and brakes.
- Material Handling: Safely lift and place materials to support production, including feeding furnaces and loading finished steel onto transport.
- Coordination: Collaborate with signalers, spotters, and riggers to move loads precisely.
- Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, clean the cabin, and report any defects or malfunctions immediately.
- Documentation: Maintain logs of material movement, daily inspections, and crane performance.
Requirements:
- Experience: 3-5+ years in heavy industry, specifically within steel mills or metallurgical plants.
- Certification: NCCCO crane operator certification (or regional equivalent) is often required.
- Skills: Strong spatial awareness, ability to operate under pressure, and proficiency in understanding crane load charts.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Environmental Working Conditions:
- Requires working at high elevations within a crane cabin.
- Exposure to high temperatures, noise, dust, and heavy, hot materials
