Job Description:
A Process Tapper (Ferro) in a steel manufacturing company is a skilled technical role responsible for managing the extraction of molten metal and slag from electric arc or submerged arc furnaces. They specialize in preparing tapholes, managing the molten metal flow into ladles, and ensuring safety during the high-temperature tapping process.
Key Responsibilities
- Taphole Preparation and Maintenance: Opening and maintaining furnace tapholes, which involves removing clay plugs using steel rods, oxygen lances, or chisel-edged bars.
- Molten Material Handling: Controlling the flow of molten ferro alloys or slag from the furnace into ladles, molds, or crucibles.
- Closing the Taphole: Molding, inserting, or replacing clay plugs to seal the taphole after tapping.
- Siphon Management: Using air hoses and siphons to transfer molten metal, including adjusting valves and connections.
- Equipment Upkeep: Maintaining tools used in the tapping process.
- Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to safety protocols (PPE, SOPs) due to the high-temperature hazards of molten materials.
- Coordination: Working with crane operators to position ladles and with furnace operators for optimal timing.
Required Skills and Experience
- Experience: Generally 2.0 to 5.0 years in a ferro-alloy or steel manufacturing plant.
- Knowledge: Understanding of ferro-alloy smelting, furnace operations (submerged arc furnaces), and slag management.
- Technical Proficiency: Ability to use oxygen lances, steel rods, and other tools for breaking taphole surfaces.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work in a high-temperature environment.
