Job Description:
A Chief Operating Officer (COO) in a steel manufacturing company oversees end-to-end production, supply chain, and safety to drive efficiency and profitability. They are responsible for managing P&L, implementing technology, and ensuring plant uptime. Key requirements include 15-20+ years of heavy industry experience and a bachelor’s in engineering.
Core Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership: Manage daily operations of integrated steel plants, including melting, rolling mills, and wire rods to ensure 98%+ uptime and optimal production capacity.
- Supply Chain & Logistics: Oversee procurement, inventory management, and raw material logistics to maximize efficiency.
- Financial & P&L Management: Manage budgets and cost optimization to improve EBITDA.
- Safety and Compliance: Establish a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with ISO, BIS, and environmental standards.
- Technical Optimization: Drive continuous improvement (automation/digitization) and debottlenecking projects to increase plant yield.
- Team Leadership: Lead large, often unionized, teams, fostering safety and productivity.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: 15-20+ years in steel or heavy manufacturing, with a proven track record in leadership roles.
- Education: Degree in Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineering required; MBA preferred.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of SMS (Steel Melting Shop) and rolling mill operations.
- Skills: Strong analytical, leadership, and crisis management skills.

- Reduction in operating expenses (OPEX).
- Production yield improvement and quality compliance.
- Safety performance (reduction of accidents/defects).
