A Purchase Manager for a steel manufacturing company typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical/Production), Materials Management, or Commerce, combined with 8–15 years of experience in raw material procurement (iron ore, coal, scrap, ferroalloys). Key skills include vendor negotiation, ERP/SAP proficiency, cost analysis, and supply chain management.
Core Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical or Production, or B.Com) is required; an MBA in Supply Chain or Materials Management is preferred.
- Experience: 8 to 15+ years of experience in procurement, specifically within the steel, sponge iron, or heavy manufacturing industry.
- Technical Skills: High proficiency in ERP systems (SAP MM), MS Excel, and procurement software.
- Industry Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of raw material sourcing (iron ore, coal, coke, scrap), logistics, EXIM (export-import) documentation, and inventory control.
- Functional Skills: Strong negotiation, analytical, and communication skills, with a focus on cost-saving strategies.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Sourcing: Managing the end-to-end procurement process for raw materials and consumables to ensure uninterrupted production.
- Vendor Management: Identifying, evaluating, and negotiating with suppliers to secure the best prices and delivery schedules.
- Market Intelligence: Monitoring industry trends, price fluctuations, and market conditions to minimize costs.
- Compliance: Ensuring compliance with company procurement policies, statutory regulations, and quality standards.
- Reporting: Preparing MIS reports on inventory, expenditure, and purchasing activities.
Typical Compensation (Raipur/Bhilai Region)
- Salary Range: ₹7.00 LPA to 9 LPA, depending on experience and company size.
