Job Description:
A Rigger in a steel manufacturing company is a specialized tradesperson responsible for the safe lifting, moving, positioning, and anchoring of heavy machinery, structural steel components, and raw materials. They work closely with crane operators, fitters, and welders, ensuring that all loads are properly secured using specialized equipment like slings, chains, and cables, and that all activities adhere strictly to OSHA and company safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Load Preparation: Inspecting, selecting, and preparing appropriate rigging gear (chains, wire ropes, slings, shackles) according to load weight, center of gravity, and size.
- Lifting & Moving: Attaching loads to cranes, hoists, or forklifts and guiding them into position, using tools like chainfalls and jacks.
- Structural Steel Assembly: Assisting in erecting, aligning, and leveling steel framework, columns, and beams.
- Equipment Maintenance: Inspecting and maintaining rigging equipment before and after use, ensuring it is in proper working order and safely stored.
- Safety Compliance: Ensuring all lifting operations meet safety protocols, including using proper PPE and implementing "Stop Work" authority if a lift is unsafe.
- Signal Person: Signaling or verbally directing crane operators to move loads, especially when the operator’s view is obstructed.
- Dismantling: Breaking down and removing rigging gear and temporary supports.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: 1-2 years of experience as a rigger, preferably in a heavy engineering or steel plant environment.
- Certification: NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) or equivalent certification is often mandatory.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of load dynamics, sling angles, and rigging techniques.
- Math Skills: Ability to perform quick calculations for weight distribution.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret structural drawings and technical diagrams.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work at heights, lift heavy equipment, and work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, dust).
- Communication: Strong verbal skills to coordinate with team members.
Typical Working Environment
- Manufacturing Plant: Indoor and outdoor, often working with heavy, hot, or sharp materials.
- Conditions: Noisy, dusty, and requires working on uneven surfaces or at significant heights.
- Hours: Often requires 12-hour shifts, weekends, and overtime.
Potential Hazards
- Working near moving mechanical parts.
- High-risk lifts (overhead, heavy, or unbalanced loads).
- Exposure to welding sparks, fumes, and intense noise.
