Job Description:
A Steel Manufacturing Melter operates furnaces to melt raw materials (scrap, alloys) into molten steel, controlling temperature, composition, and quality, while managing slag, tapping metal into ladles, and strictly following safety/maintenance procedures for efficient, high-quality production. Key duties involve furnace charging, temperature/chemical adjustments, sampling, refining, and coordination with the production team to meet specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Furnace Operation: Charge furnaces with scrap, additives, and fluxes; operate equipment (EAF, BOF, Induction Furnaces) to melt and refine metal.
- Process Control: Monitor and adjust temperatures, chemical composition (metallurgy), and flow of air/coolant; manage slag removal.
- Quality Assurance: Draw samples, analyze materials, and make adjustments to ensure steel meets required specifications.
- Tapping & Transfer: Safely tap molten steel into ladles for casting or further processing.
- Safety & Maintenance: Adhere to strict safety protocols, clean equipment, perform basic maintenance, and troubleshoot issues.
- Material Handling: Prepare and load raw materials (scrap, chemicals) using shovels, cranes, or charging machines.
Essential Skills & Knowledge
- Understanding of metallurgy, heat treatment, and furnace operations.
- Ability to read and interpret computer data and production charts.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of safety procedures for high-heat environments.
Working Environment
- Physically demanding, often involving working near moving machinery and intense heat.
- Requires coordination with other team members (cranes, maintenance, quality control).
