Job Description:
A Purchase Manager for an SMS/Rolling Mill procures raw materials, consumables, and capital equipment, develops procurement strategies, manages supplier relationships, and negotiates contracts to ensure cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency. Key responsibilities include sourcing bulk raw materials like scrap and ferroalloys, managing inventory, coordinating with production and accounts, and ensuring timely delivery within budget and quality standards. This role also requires strong analytical, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
Key responsibilities
- Strategy and planning: Develop and implement procurement strategies aligned with organizational goals, focusing on cost optimization and supply chain efficiency.
- Supplier management: Identify, evaluate, and select suppliers, negotiate contracts, and build long-term partnerships. This includes managing supplier performance, resolving issues, and ensuring ethical and sustainable practices.
- Material procurement: Source a wide range of materials for the steel melting shop (SMS) and rolling mill, including raw materials (e.g., scrap, ferroalloys, limestone), consumables (e.g., gases, lubricants, refractories), spares, and capital expenditure (capex) items.
- Inventory and demand management: Monitor consumption based on production plans, collaborate with other departments to forecast demand, and manage inventory levels to avoid shortages or overstocking.
- Cost control and analysis: Conduct market research, analyze pricing fluctuations, and perform spend analysis to identify opportunities for cost reduction.
- Logistics and documentation: Handle logistics, including cargo clearance, and manage associated documentation and letters of credit (L/C).
- Performance monitoring: Track key performance indicators such as on-time delivery, YOY cost reduction, and supplier quality metrics.
Key skills and qualifications
- Experience in procurement, particularly within the steel or manufacturing sector.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills.
- Proficiency in supplier evaluation and vendor development.
- Experience with ERP systems is often required.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Familiarity with logistics, supply chain management, and financial aspects like L/C management.
- An MBA in Supply Chain or Materials Management may be preferred.
